I could not believe how lucky we got with this sunny afternoon for Madie & Trey’s Downtown Denver City Park couple photos! Denver has had quite a few gloomy days this winter and the sunshine was a welcome respite!
Denver City Park Couple Photos with Vintage Flair
When we first started chatting, I asked if they had any favorite spots around Denver. Madie immediately told me they love to watch the sunset in City Park, which she and Trey affectionately refer to as “the sunset spot.” That was just about the sweetest thing I’d ever heard, so we pretty quickly landed on City Park as our location!
Since I’m fairly new to Colorado, this was the first time I had been to City Park. It will definitely be a new favorite Denver spot, especially for engagement and portrait sessions! There is so much variety in this little area. One of my favorite parts had to be the killer view of the Downtown Denver skyline.
In addition to great views of the skyline, there’s plenty of open field space with beautiful trees. Since Madie & Trey come to the park so often, they showed me all their favorite spots. They also told me about the other plants that bloom during the summer. I can’t wait to watch as the seasons change!
Just across the big pond (which was filled to the brim with geese this day) there’s an open air pavilion. It has the most gorgeous colorful tiles on its’ archways! All of the gates and railings were painted a bright teal color, which I thought complimented Madie’s colorful crochet sweater so well. Always obsessed with a vibrant, vintage vibe.
As we were planning, I sent Madie a mood board with inspiration on the general aesthetic of their portraits. I told her they were more than welcome to use that as a starting point for planning their outfits. Madie described it as “cozy vintage winter vibes” and she couldn’t have nailed it more! Madie wore this amazing colorful crochet sweater that she found from an Etsy seller. The bright sun, Madie & Trey’s outfits, and all the color of the architecture made this session so fun!
From the second I pulled out my camera, Madie & Trey were smiling and giggling. I could not get enough of their infectious energy! I think it’s so special when you can tell how much a couple loves each other in a photograph. Madie & Trey were the definition of that. It can be nerve-wracking to be in front of the camera! But, they really leaned into enjoying each other’s company. In my opinion, a couple who is comfortable and having fun with each other is the sure-fire way to get portraits that look and feel authentic to your personality.
Usually as I’m wrapping up a portrait session, I ask if there’s anything the couple wants that we haven’t done. When I asked Madie and Trey this, Trey said “Well, I really love trees.” He mentioned there was a tree over in another section of the park that leaned low enough to sit on. I said “Immediately yes.” I’m so glad he brought it up; the portraits in the tree were some of my favorite photographs from the whole evening!
Madie & Trey have lived in Denver for a few years now. As we were chatting, Madie and I actually discovered we’re both from the same town in North Texas! It’s always so fun to make these random connections with my clients–it truly is a small world. Since I’m new to Colorado, they so generously gave me all the Denver coffee shop recommendations. We also walked around the path where you can see the Denver Zoo, and I was amazed that the elephant enclosure literally looks over the park! They also mentioned that City Park has a great summer concert series.
Taking these couple portraits was sincerely such a creative refresh for me. Winter can be hard for a photographer, especially when we’re missing the sun! It was such a breath of fresh air to photograph this sweet couple in the most gorgeous warm light. It made it even better that Madie & Trey are so fun!!
